ULTRA

Introduction

Ultra is a social app that tailors content to user sentiment and uses blockchain to prioritize transparency, privacy, and data integrity.

Instead of relying on opaque, company-controlled algorithms, Ultra lets users shape their own experience. It addresses ad saturation, biased moderation, censorship, and blacklisting, creating a space where people can engage freely and securely.

Problem

Challenges addressed
01

Ad-driven content. Feeds overrun by advertising dilute organic interaction and make everything feel commercialized.

02

Algorithm bias. Proprietary algorithms prioritize profit over well-being, building echo chambers and filtering inconsistently.

03

Censorship and blacklisting. Subjective moderation erodes trust and frustrates users.

04

Transparency and privacy. Users want real control over their data and platforms that respect it.

Research

Understanding user needs

User surveys. Across 500 people: 65% were dissatisfied with ad-centric prioritization, 78% distrusted algorithm-driven recommendations, and 82% were concerned about privacy.

Competitive analysis. Identified gaps in transparency, privacy, and user-driven customization.

Blockchain exploration. Investigated secure, tamper-proof content tagging and data sharing.

Key insights

Sentiment-driven content preferences were a genuinely novel and appreciated idea.

Blockchain-based transparency could be a real differentiator.

Trust grows when users control their content exposure and personal data.

Design process

Empathize

Mapped user frustrations — no control over the feed, overwhelming ad monetization, and concerns about data security and free expression.

Define

A user-centric platform that uses sentiment analysis and blockchain to deliver a positive, transparent, personalized experience.

Ideate

Sentiment-based feed filters, on-chain content verification, a privacy-first data model, and community-driven moderation.

Prototype

Wireframes for sentiment onboarding and privacy settings, the personalized home feed with transparency indicators, and a blockchain verification dashboard.

Solution

Features delivered
01

Sentiment-driven content

Customizable filters for user-defined categories, with AI sentiment analysis in feed curation.

02

Blockchain transparency

Verifiable content sources and engagement data on-chain, with immutable moderation records.

03

Enhanced privacy

User-controlled data preferences and encryption backed by blockchain.

04

Decentralized moderation

Community-driven tagging and flagging that reduces bias and blacklisting.

Testing & iteration

Tested with 40 early adopters and refined through iteration on onboarding and the verification interface.

92%

of testers found the sentiment-based filters intuitive and valuable.

Streamlined onboarding

88% appreciated blockchain's role in transparency; sentiment setup and the dashboard UI were simplified for usability.

Reflection

Lessons learned

Transparency builds trust, especially where users already feel exploited by hidden algorithms.

Personalization needs balance to avoid over-segmentation and echo chambers.

Blockchain adds real value, but only with a genuinely user-friendly interface on top of it.
